Providence Connections celebrates family with parade, activities
It rained on the Providence Connections Community Day Parade on July 17 — literally. But that didn’t stop over 100 kids from enjoying music, a rock climbing wall, crafts and snacks.
The parade started at 9:15 a.m. and traveled up and down Brighton Road, chanting “We are family!” Some children marched with giant puppets, and others held signs and posters designed around the theme of family.
After the parade, the children performed songs on steel pan drums. Tish Donze, one of the program directors, said that Solomon’s Steelpan taught the children how to play over the past three weeks in preparation for their performance.
Strong Women, Strong Girls, a non-profit that works with girls to develop good self-esteem and leadership skills, set up a craft table for the kids, and Venture Outdoors, a local non-profit, brought its rock climbing wall.
Providence runs a summer day camp for nine weeks during the summer, from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m.
The community day is being held in concert with the day camp, Donze said.
“Now we know it’s a work day. We wanted it especially to be for the kids,” Donze said. “We really try to accommodate working families.”
This was the first community day Providence Connections hosted, said Syreeta Davis, the coordinator for the after school camp Providence runs. The center itself has been open for 15 years, and the parade and activities are part of its 15 year anniversary celebrations.
Most of those in attendance were part of the summer day camp program, but a few families came as well, despite the rain.
