The status of a recreation center and new soccer field for Riverview Park proposed by Mayor Luke Ravenstahl, Councilwoman Darlene Harris and Representative Don Walko is up in the air.

Harris said that at the moment, she is waiting to hear from the mayor’s office about the next step in the process.

She said that she believed the mayor’s office was going to organize another committee meeting between Observatory Hill, Inc., the Brightwood Civic Group and the Brighton Heights Citizens Federation.

“I don’t know the timeline as of yet,” Harris said. “I know they want to get started on the soccer field first.”

The first meeting announcing the new recreation center was held in Brightwood in February. At that meeting Walko said the center would be free to the public, except on special occasions.

Walko confirmed in an e-mail that the $4 million he set aside in the state’s capital budget was still available and a priority.

Harris said that the city planned on using RAD money to partially fund the center, but she did not have more details.

The center has not yet been designed. Community members discussed potential ideas at the spring meeting, but nothing was set in stone.
