As part of the University of Pittsburgh’s Pitt Makes a Difference Day, the Central Northside received two busloads of Pitt volunteers to help clean up their neighborhood and complete a total of seven projects.  The 65 students, along with 15 neighborhood volunteers did the following projects:

• Drovers Repose Garden (Taylor and Brighton): Three shrubs were planted and six yards of mulch spread.
• Brighton Road Garden: Weeding and spreading eight yards of mulch.
• Mechanics Retreat Park: Pruning, installation of soaker hoses for next year and spreading three yards of mulch.
• Alpine Gardens: Weeding and cleaning.
• Children’s Garden: Mulching.
• Alley and street clean up. 45 bags of litter and organic debris were collected along with about four yards of loose organic debris.

“[The students] always are a lot of fun to work with and like the name of their program, they come determined to make a difference,” John Engle said in an e-mail.  This is the students’ third year of helping out the Central Northside.
