Tired of having to choose between football and church?

Calvary United Methodist Church in Allegheny West says you don’t have to!

“We gave up a long time ago on thinking that people wouldn’t wear their Steelers jerseys to church, so we embraced it,” said Calvary Chair of Communications Yvonne Hudson.

On Steelers home game days, those attending worship service can enjoy free valet parking and a light lunch following the 11 a.m. service. On Dec. 12, football fans and church goers can stop in before the service to enjoy coffee or hot coco.

Yvonne said the church wanted to make a little extra effort when the Steelers play 1 p.m. home games, since those games immediately follow their worship service.

“We recognize that we’re in competition for parking and access in the neighborhood,” she said.

Indeed, Calvary is the closest place of worship to Heinz Field, and church officials hope that people will stop in on their way to the games.  They want to let people know they’re open and will welcome anyone and everyone, and give the public a chance to see the beautifully restored interior and Tiffany stained-glass windows.

And while the choir might not sing the Steelers fight song, it does at least wear black and gold in honor of Pittsburgh’s champion football team.
