The Steel City Improv Theater is stepping out of their little basement home in East Deutschtown and out onto the big stage in New York City.
Four SCIT groups have been invited to the 14th annual Del Close Marathon, the largest improvisational theater event of the year.
The improv groups from the SCIT submitted tapes of their shows to the Upright Citizens Brigade, the group that started the DCM. Improv groups from all over the country who meet the standards of the UCB are invited to perform at the Marathon.
The Union, Blue Stocking Babes, AKA and The LuPones will be representing the SCIT in New York at this year’s Marathon.
The Union is the SCIT teacher team, and this will be the second consecutive year they have been invited to DCM. Blue Stocking Babes are an all lady troupe that performs once a month at the SCIT. The group says they are excited to have the opportunity to represent the emerging female presence in the comedic scene.
“Women have become an integral part of the numerous troupes that have formed over the last year,” said Ayne Terceira, team captain of Blue Stocking Babes. “Going to the Del Close Marathon is the culmination of this transition. It demonstrates that women are now full members of Pittsburgh’s comedy scene and competitive with troupes coming from all over the country. I don’t think you could have said this 10 years ago.”
AKA is a long form Harold team, a specific style of improv. The LuPones is a musical improv group that performs twice a month at the SCIT. They are made up of musical theater vets who are also improvisers.
There were only six musical improv teams invited to the festival out of hundreds of entries and only two of them do not hail from New York, one of them being The LuPones.
“The community is growing rapidly,” said Kasey Daley, cofounder of the SCIT. “In 2011, The Union was the first Pittsburgh team to perform at DCM.
This year there are four of our teams competing. Our community has grown exponentially, and there are people from all over the city coming to perform and watch our shows.”
