Children read the speeches of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. last year during the “King for a Day” program at the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh, hosted by The Saturday Light Brigade Radio Show.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on Monday, January 20 is being celebrated a few different ways around the Northside this year.

Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh

From 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., the Studio: On Freedom Corner program allows children of all ages to make “art that celebrates Pittsburgh’s own Freedom Corner, the historic intersection of Centre and Crawford Streets in the hill District and a symbol of the home of the Civil Rights Movement right here in our city,” according to the Museum’s website.

From 12 p.m. to 3 p.m., children can make clay birds that symbolize their dreams and will be photographed and put on display at the Museum. This activity is part of the Studio: Many Hands program that has teamed up with Union Project’s Many Hands project.

From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the lobby of the Museum, kids and adults will be able to join in “reading aloud the speeches of Dr. King at the microphone in the ‘King for a Day’ program hosted by The Saturday Light Brigade Radio Show,” according to the Museum’s website.

Streaming Justice will also take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. that is hosted by The Saturday Light Brigade Radio Productions. It is a four hour live webcast that will explore “civil rights accomplishments, challenges, and dreams for the future,” according to the Museum’s website.

At 2 p.m. dancers from the Hill Dance Academy Theatre will perform and then teach some of their moves to people watching so Museum visitors can then also join in on the dancing.

At 3 p.m. a Freedom Circle and Sign a Long will take place in the Studio singing songs from the Civil Rights Movement.

Admission to the museum is $13 for adults, $12 for children ages 2 to 18 and senior citizens, and children under 2 years old.

The Mattress Factory

The museum will be open on Monday from 12 p.m. until 4 p.m. and admission price is Give What You Can.

MLK Day will also be the host for the Mini-Factory Launch Party at the Mattress Factory. It is a new program for 3 to 6 year olds that will also be able to play in the new mobile pop-up space.

The Carnegie Science Center

There will be free admission all day 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.
