About 450 people showed up to support the Whiskey Garden and Barrelhouse, opened by Wigle Whiskey on Friday, May 30.

After dozens of people rolled whiskey barrels across the McCullough Bridge on Friday evening, hundreds of people joined Wigle Whiskey to christen its new Whiskey Garden and Barrelhouse, 1055 Spring Garden Ave.

Attendees were served drinks, BBQ and history lessons on how whiskey came to be a thriving part of Pittsburgh’s past.

According to a pamphlet handed out at the event, “American Whiskey was born in Pittsburgh.”

“By 1850, Allegheny County produced half a barrels worth of Rye Whiskey for every man, woman and child in America.”

Meredith Grelli, co-owner of Wigle Whiskey, said the Wigle team had a great time and were excited with the overall turnout. Grelli said about 450 were in attendance.

“Hopefully [people] come out for a summer full of events,” Grelli said.

About 70 volunteers signed up to participate in the whiskey barrel roll, where teams of 15 to 20 people were given a shot of whiskey, a t-shirt and then raced across the McCullough Bridge from the Wigle Whiskey Distillery in the Strip District, 2401 Smallman St., to the Whiskey Garden and Barrelhouse, 1055 Spring Garden Ave. Each team was given a different mode of transportation.
