The Carnegie Science Center is usually a place for children to learn about experimenting and the behind the scenes of science, but this Friday it will be adults only.

On June 13, patrons of the Carnegie Science Center can learn about the science of beer alongside others age 21 and older. A $17 ticket gets visitors ten beer samples from five Pittsburgh breweries.

Susan Zimecki, a spokeswoman for the Science Center, said the Center came up with the idea for the adult’s only nights when their summer GUITAR exhibit drew a large crowd of adults in 2012.

“We observed that often they would look like they really wanted to try our hands-on activities, but they seemed to be holding back in the spirit of ‘let the kids have a chance,’” Zimecki said.

A ticket to the event, which will run from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., includes samples from North Country Brewing, The Church Brew Works, Rivertowne Brewing Company, Hop Farm Brewing Company and Straub Beer.

Noah Petronic, a hop farmer from Soergel’s Orchards in Wexford, will speak about what goes into growing hops at Soergel’s.

Representatives from South Hills Brewing Supply will demonstrate home brewing techniques and allow visitors to touch the barley and hops, Zimecki said.

A ticket also includes a free $15 credit for slot play at Rivers Casino, located within walking distance of the Science Center.

“It seemed like a great idea to have no-kids nights at the Science Center,” Zimecki said. “We had the first one that summer and it was so successful that we have made them a monthly offering.”
