The Rotary Club of Pittsburgh’s Northside held its annual fundraiser Thursday, Oct. 30 at the Elks Lodge in Historic Deutschtown.

The Rotary Club of Pittsburgh’s Northside held its annual fundraiser Thursday, Oct. 30 at the Elks Lodge on Cedar Avenue in Historic Deutschtown.

All proceeds of the fundraiser  will go towards purchasing new laptops for the winners of the Northside Leadership Conference Scholarship, which will be announced in the upcoming months.

“Last year we bought Kindle Fires instead of laptops,” Northside Rotary Club president Wayne Alling said. “Last year we awarded sixteen Kindle Fires.”

This was the first year that the fundraiser took the form of a friendly bowling tournament.

“Usually we just have a spaghetti dinner or something along those lines,” Alling said. “I just found out a few weeks ago the Elks Lodge had bowling lanes up here and we decided to do that instead. This might be the new thing from now on.”

This year the fundraiser had 11 sponsors including WesBanco, the Salvation Army of Western Pennsylvania, and Chateau Café & Cakery. All sponsors donated $100 to the fundraiser.

The tournament itself consisted of four teams of five. The scores for each team were averaged after two rounds, and the two teams with the highest averages met in the championship match.

Rotary Club member and Vice President Mike Delie captained the winning team, dubbed the “Superbowlers.” The winners received gold medals and their names on a plaque.

Other prizes were given out during a raffle and, in the spirit of Halloween, there was a team theme contest. One theme included Pittsburgh Steelers attire while another was based off of situations in a single frame of bowling.

The Rotary Club of Pittsburgh’s Northside is a program meant to establish strong friendships and professional relationships between its members. The club regularly partakes in community service and holds events to strengthen its relationship within the community.
