Dan Rooney and Carol Peterson promoted their latest book “Allegheny City: A History of Pittsburgh’s Northside” (University of Pittsburgh Press, 2013) July 15 during a book signing at the Allegheny City Historic Gallery in Historic Deutschtown.

Dan Rooney and Carol Peterson are always willing to talk about the Northside, which was just what they did July 15 during a book signing at the Allegheny City Historic Gallery in Historic Deutschtown.

The authors of “Allegheny City: A History of Pittsburgh’s Northside” (University of Pittsburgh Press, 2013) took questions from a group of 25 people before the signing.

Rooney, the Pittsburgh Steelers chairman and former U.S. ambassador to Ireland, is a longtime Allegheny West resident, and explained several historical tidbits like how most Northsiders built summer homes in Sewickley, and when Allegheny City became part of Pittsburgh in 1907 those residents moved to the Sewickley area permanently.

“So Sewickley residents are fellow Northsiders? Now I know,” gallery owner Bill Gandy said.

Rooney and Peterson, a well-known house historian and preservationist, met over 20 years ago when he hired her to research the history of his house on North Lincoln Avenue.

They explained how they might have not agreed all the time during the book writing process, but they always came to a mutual agreement with the book’s best interest in mind.

The authors also previously held a book signing at CCAC-Allegheny.

The new historical gallery, which has held events in the past, is set to open officially in August.
