Veterans in town for the Submariners Convention made up a majority of the crowd during a Sept. 11 Memorial Service on board the USS Requin at the Carnegie Science Center Friday on North Shore.

It’s been 14 years since the Sept. 11 attacks, when terrorist hijackers overtook passenger airplanes and targeted the Twin Towers in New York City, and Washington D.C.’s Pentagon and White House (the airplane en route to the White House crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania after passengers attempted to overcome the hijackers), claiming 2,977 civilian lives as well as 415 firefighters and law enforcement lives, respectively, in the response.

The Carnegie Science Center hosted a memorial service on board the USS Requin on North Shore Friday in conjunction with the annual, week-long Submariners Convention, which provides submariners an opportunity to unite with their fellow shipmates and submariners from other boats.

Hundreds of supporters and veterans filled the space on the shore across from the submarine as Captain Jeffrey S. Coran, Commanding Officer of the Steel City NROTC, gave a brief speech reflecting on the historic events.

“We can not forget how we came together as a nation that day,” Coran said.

The service concluded with the Tolling of the Bells and a 21-gun salute.
