Community walk to raise awareness about student commute
By Justin Criado
A “Community Walk for Safety” will be held Nov. 5 at the Northside Propel School on 1805 Buena Vista St. from 6:30-8 p.m.
The event was organized by two Northside students, who must take a Port Authority bus from their home in Charles Street Valley in order to get to school in East Liberty, typically before 6 a.m., using an unlighted pathway to do so.
The students received a $1,000 mini-grant from the Buhl Foundation’s OneNorthside initiative.
The event, called “…A Morning Walk in the Dark,” hopes to raise awareness and mobilize community support to restore school bus transportation
At the event, community residents will hear from a panel of Pittsburgh Public School students who will discuss the hardships of early start times, maintaining good attendance, and navigating dark and potentially dangerous routes to school. A community walk to simulate the students’ early morning commute will take place from 8-8:30pm. Doors open at 6 p.m.
