Library in the Park, hosted by the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, will take place this summer in two Northside locations:
-Northview Heights Playground, which is a new site, starts Wednesday, June 22, from 2-3:30 p.m.
-Troy Hill Citizens Park, begins Wednesday, June 29, from 2-3:30 p.m.
The Library in the Park schedule will continue on alternate Wednesdays at these sites throughout the summer.
“Library in the Park is another way Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh is extending its reach to make reading and resources accessible to all communities in a fun and engaging way,” said Carlton Stout, library services manager at CLP-Allegheny, who coordinates the program. “It’s part of the Library’s ongoing commitment to literacy and education.”
All ages are welcome to come meet Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh librarians for outdoor activities, including crafts, games and reading books right in their own neighborhood.
Residents can sign up for a library card and also register for the Library’s Summer Reading Program 90,000-book challenge. Readers who register for the challenge can win free books and gifts cards at milestones along the way and check their progress throughout the summer on Library in the Park days, online or at any of the 19 Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh locations.
Research has proven that if children and teens read between four and six books over the summer they will be a lot more likely to retain or even improve the skills they learned the previous year. Adults gain when they read, too. Reading reduces stress, keeps memory sharp, the mind healthy and ensures capacity to learn as people age.
Reading is social and all ages can explore interests, discover new ones and connect with others, introducing people and experiences that are different from their own. This nurtures diversity and helps to build empathy.
