November newsletter from Councilwoman Harris
November is finally upon us, and it is once again time to give thanks for all of our blessings. The leaves are changing and falling in our beautiful neighborhoods throughout the Northside, and the holiday season is coming closer! November means it is time to decorate for Thanksgiving and prepare for winter weather. Please keep in mind that although the weather may still be fair, winter is around the corner. Now is the perfect time to set aside a supplies kit for any emergencies that may arise in the coming months due to snow storms or power outages.
As we enjoy the autumn weather, I also want to remind everyone to please keep the well-being of your neighbors in mind. Please check in on your elderly neighbors before the cold weather settles in for good, and keep in mind that they may not have their own emergency supplies kits ready. Kits should include a flashlight, blanket, batteries, battery-powered radio, bottled water, and snacks, but those are just the basics.
Also, please be cognizant of the damaging effects the cold weather may have on your pets’ paws! Cooler weather can be refreshing for us, but the harsh cold of sidewalks and streets can cause damage to our furry friends’ paws, so take measures to protect them. Riverview Park is a great place to take your dog for a brisk walk or jog, and it also offers a beautiful view of the changing colors of fall. The grass in Riverview Park will also offer some relief from the harshness of the winter sidewalks. Now is also the time to review Pittsburgh ordinances protecting pets during the colder months, and if you see something, say something! Animals should not be left outside or in cars for long periods of time during the winter.
Never hesitate to contact my office with questions or concerns about the neighborhood. My staff and I can be reached at 412-255-2135, or darlene.harris@pittsburghpa.gov. Enjoy the colors and breezes of autumn!
