Light of Life Rescue Mission, 10 E. North Ave., has extended its chapel hours throughout the weekend for the homeless to come in and stay warm. The chapel will be open 24 hours a day and there will be hot beverages, food and movies.

Kate Wadsworth, Public Relations and Manager of Aftercare/Mentoring at Light of Life, said the shelter’s street engagement team has partnered with LIVING Ministry and the North Side Homeless Alliance, and are making extra rounds outside to get people inside and out of the cold, or properly equip them with the necessary clothing if they wish to stay outside.

The shelter is also asking for donations of thermal tops and bottoms, sturdy adult men’s gloves, hand warmers, and socks to be dropped off at the shelter that can be handed out to those in need.

Wadsworth said there is a medical officer at the shelter who is training staff to recognize the signs and symptoms of frostbite and hypothermia.

“If anyone needs to get warm they can come here and we’ll take care of them,” Wadsworth said. “We’re not going to turn anyone out back into the cold without making sure they’re taken care of”
