City of Asylum will have the grand opening for its bookstore at Alphabet City, 40 W. North Ave., from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, January 14.
Children’s Storytelling will begin at 11:30 a.m., and there will be free coffee and treats as well as 10% off all book purchases.
The bookstore will specialize in translations, children’s books, cookbooks, and literature from around the world.
During a press conference in hard hat tour of the Masonic Building in May, Co-founder and President of City of Asylum Henry Reese said the bookstore will be home to the largest number of translated books in the United States.
The shelves will be stocked with the entire collection of the Library of America, as well as books from publishers such as New Directions, Archipelago, Dalkey Archive, the New York Review of Books, Copper Canyon, and Ugly Duckling. The books will be mostly new, but there will be “a selection of ‘pre-owned’ with low mileage. And a selection of first editions, including many Nobel Prize winners dating back 100 years,” according to an email sent out by City of Asylum.
