Prime Stage Theatre has set its sights on the next performance to take the stage at the New Hazlett Theater, which includes a cast of Pittsburgh teenagers playing Pittsburgh teenagers.

“The Perks of Being a Wallflower” will run from May 5 to 14. Directed by Jeffrey Cordell, the stage adaptation is based off of the 1999 novel written by Stephen Chbosky that documents the highs and lows of adolescent life through the eyes of the story’s protagonist and Pittsburgh teenager Charlie.

Cordell has been taking the actors around to different Pittsburgh locations that are mentioned in the book that include: Eide’s Comics in the Strip District, the Hollywood Theater in Dormont, King’s Restaurant in McMurray, Peters Township High School, and the Fort Pitt Tunnels, which provided the setting for a pivotal scene featured in the 2012 film, which Chbosky adapted for the screen and directed.

“Because the novel was inspired by Chbosky’s own teenage years in Pittsburgh, I believed it was important for the actors to visit places alluded to in the play,” said Cordell.
