Pittsburgh and Allegheny County young people between the ages of 14 and 21 have until 11 p.m. on Saturday, June 3 to apply for Learn & Earn, the summer youth employment program.

Partner4Work, the organization tapped to coordinate the program on behalf of Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald and Pittsburgh Mayor William Peduto, extended the application an extra two weeks to allow more young people the opportunity to apply for the six-week, paid summer jobs program. The application can be found at www.jobs4summer.org.

Learn & Earn is a joint effort to connect 1,300 city residents and 700 county residents with job opportunities that position them for later careers. In 2016, Learn & Earn delivered summer jobs to nearly 2,000 teens and young adults who, in turn, returned more than $1.3 million in wages to the local economy. Participating youth worked an average of 150 hours each and received soft skills and other work-readiness training during the program.

The work period for 2017 begins on June 26 and runs through August 4, 2017. Work-readiness training and orientation begins June 19. Pay rates vary according the type of job offered. Most young workers will earn $7.25 per hour; young people ages 17 and older selected for the competitive corporate internship experience will earn $8.50 an hour. In previous years, young people have organized summer camp activities, produced documentaries, conducted research, performed office work, planted urban gardens, developed and tested video games and more as a summer job.

Applications must be completed online, and all supporting documentation must be uploaded for an applicant to be considered for the program.
