Tour goers drink local craft beer as they inspect the gull-wing doors of a silver, 1981 DeLorean that make the vintage car look like a mechanical bird ready for takeoff.
The DeLorean, along with countless other vintage cars, line the streets and are on display in residential garages throughout the Northside’s Allegheny West neighborhood for Alleys, Axles & Ales, the annual car show and local beer tasting. The self-guided tour is in its third year. Michael Skelli, owner of the DeLorean, traveled from Delaware to display his car.
“I love to talk to people about why they love their car and to show off mine,” Skelli said. “The smiles and the fingers pointing [at the DeLorean] are really fun.”
Volunteer judges from the Jaguar Club of Pittsburgh Concours d’Elegance examine the authenticity, cleanliness and operational functions of the vehicles before giving points for national recognition, according to the chief judge of Concours d’Elegance, Bryan Williams.
As judges inspect the cars, participants devour local beers from Allegheny City Brewing, Penn Brewery, Threadbare Cider House and Meadery, and War Streets Brewery. All proceeds of the tour benefit Allegheny YMCA Summer Camp Program and the Allegheny Commons Project of the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy.
