Food For Thought: Supervision & Leadership at Southern Tier Brewing Company

This is part of the North Side/Shore Chamber of Commerce’s “Food for Thought” Lunch-and-Learn series. The session will focus on supervision and leadership, giving you a brief-but-useful overview of supervisory skills and techniques that will help you in your work, whether you’re the owner of a small business, a manager in a large corporation or a sole proprietor. In this 45-minute seminar, Professor Gerald Ferguson from CCAC’s Allegheny Campus Business Department, will present an overview of fundamental supervisory skills and techniques that will help you develop your business: effective communications, motivating staff, leading meetings efficiently, delegating effectively, managing your time, and facilitating change within your organization. There will also be information and a discussion of the Certificate of Supervision that has been developed by CCAC with input from chamber members. Lunch is provided. Art in Context: Before Stonewall

On the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots, Reel Q: Pittsburgh LGBTQ+ Film Festival and The Warhol present Before Stonewall, an award-winning documentary film that offers a fascinating, fast-paced history of the LGBTQ+ community in America through historical footage and revealing interviews. Co-director and producer Robert Rosenberg will appear on-screen for a Skype Q&A following the film. Afterwards, Jellyfish will host a late-night, queer dance party in the museum’s entrance space, weaving together Italo Disco, New Wave, and Post-Punk tracks with video and visual collage. Art in Context: Before Stonewall will be held on Friday, June 28 from 8:00 pm to 12:00 am at The Andy Warhol Museum. A cash bar will be available. This event is free. 2001 Night Club Reunion Party at Nova Place

Break out your Bell-Bottoms and come Boogie at Nova Place (Old Allegheny Center Mall). Recreate Northside’s hottest Disco Clubs (the 2001!) The party only costs $10 per person, proceeds benefit the Allegheny City Historic Gallery. Get down to all the hottest music of the Disco era. Snacks and Drinks will be available. Mosaic Sculpture with Linda Wallen at Museum Lab

Join F.I.N.E. Artist in residence, Linda Wallen, in Studio Lab to create large mosaic sculptures for the entrance of Museum Lab. This is a 3-hour workshop designed for ages 10+. It takes place in Museum Lab and is free with Museum admission. Registration is required. Participants may attend without a parent or guardian in attendance provided they register in advance online or at the admissions desk. Register here  – spots are limited! Stars at Riverview Park: Steel City Calypso

Stars at Riverview Park brings Pittsburgh’s premier jazz to Riverview Park on Saturday evenings during the summer. Bring a lawn chair or spread a blanket on Observatory Hill for incredible musical entertainment. This week’s FREE jazz performance is Steel City Calypso, scheduled from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. After the concert, be sure to stick around for Cinema in the Park that begins at dusk. BREATHE Opening at City Books

Join City Books this Saturday night, June 29 from 7-9 PM for the opening of BREATHE, a new exhibit curated by Grits Capone, a young Pittsburgh curator and artist. BREATHE is centered on telling stories of freedom, joy, happiness, power, and individuality through the lens of Blackness. Inspired by the phrase, “I can’t breathe,” last words of police brutality victim, Eric Garner, the exhibit’s goal is to repudiate a society that profits from the pain & destruction of Black bodies & minds, ultimately offering a glimpse into a reality yearning to be brought into existence. DJs Eyejay & Arie Cole were commissioned to provide the soundtrack for the evening in the form of a playlist and a mix, respectively. Light refreshments will be served. Sembene Film Festival: The Little Girl Who Sold The Sun at Alphabet City

The Little Girl Who Sold the Sun (La Petite Vendeuse de Soleil) is a luminous portrait of Sili—a twelve year old paraplegic girl—and her determination to be a street vendor of “Le Soleil,” the national newspaper of Senegal, against the wishes of the other street boys. It is at once a tribute to the indomitable spirit of the street children of Dakar and to the individual’s capability for transforming her situation. Senegalese director Djibril Diop Mambéty dedicated this film to “the courage of street children.” The scenes are expertly played by non-professional actors and with the participation of the street children. Glass Collection Event at Threadbare Cider House

Store up your glass recycling and bring it to Threadbare Cider House from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. They’ve partnered up with Pennsylvania Resources Council and Allegheny Cleanways to collect your glass bottles and get them directly to a local glass recycler. Together, they’ll ensure that your glass goes back to glass instead of a landfill. Your good citizenship will be rewarded with a free glass of cider in the Threadbare Tasting Room! Writing Action Scenes at City Books

This pop-up workshop, taught by Samantha L. Barrett, will focus on how to write clear and compelling action in fiction. Take a look at different types of action, from a character walking across a room to driving in a car to defending themselves in an epic fight scene, and discuss how to handle different scenarios. Discuss how to make slow action build toward more exciting action, and how to write the exciting stuff without getting bogged down in details. By the end, you will have a better understanding of what separates action from other aspects of writing, as well as how to write the different types of it in your own work.
