The hardships of small businesses across Pittsburgh are immeasurable as the COVID-19 outbreak continues to restrict services and extend Gov. Wolf’s stay-at-home order. One flower shop on the Northside, though, is working hard and remaining positive in the face of uncertainty: The Farmer’s Daughter in Historic Deutschtown.
“We are adapting and getting creative. We moved a huge portion of our retail offerings online and are thinking up new services to offer in the wedding industry,” says the shop’s owner, Lauren Work.
“Our business model has allowed us to keep our staff on through the outbreak of Corona. We are family, and everyone is making sacrifices and banding together to get the business through this time.”
The Farmer’s Daughter Flowers, which won “Best Flower Shop” in The Northside Chronicle’s 2019 Reader’s Choice Awards, opened at 431 East Ohio St. in 2015, is able to continue flower deliveries while operating within Pennsylvania and Federal guidelines. The shop offers various floral arrangements in unique vases and pots, wrapped in paper and ribbon, ready to deliver to customers or their loved ones in time for the Easter weekend. The blooms that fill their arrangements come from many local farms, including The Farmer’s Daughter’s own flower farm, which specializes in dahlias.
For families who are celebrating Easter but unable to visit relatives, The Farmer’s Daughter website offers special arrangements and Easter add-ons like chocolates or candles for no-contact delivery. The Farmer’s Daughter Flowers have instituted their own no-touch delivery procedure. Among the many precautions listed on their website, the gloved and masked staff handle all products with disinfectants.
While customers cannot enter their botanically inspired retail shop, which also houses their full-service floral operations including wedding and special event designs, their online boutique is live and offers standard shipping or delivery within the shop’s area.
According to the flower shop, they will continue to offer deliveries regularly to ensure future holiday traditions, like Mother’s Day, stay alive through beauty.
“Beauty in these uncertain times, the simple things. Beauty and magic. The simple kind that is all around, of which we fail to see. As long as I can remember, I have spent my time seeking it and wanting to create my own. To share my passion and striving to always leave things better than I found them,” wrote Work in a press release.
