The Brighton Heights Senior Center on McClure Avenue in the Northside was one of three Citiparks Healthy Active Living Centers in Pittsburgh to receive grant awards, which were announced earlier this month.

The site’s $100,000 award, issued by Governor Tom Wolf and the Pennsylvania Department of Aging, will go toward “general reconstruction including electrical, heating, plumbing, reconfiguration, and lighting installation,” according to a press release.

On April 29, previous to the grant award announcement, District 1 Councilman Bobby Wilson spoke at a Pittsburgh City Council Standing Committee meeting to advocate for grant funding for the Brighton Heights Senior Center:

“Before this pandemic happened, I had the opportunity to tour the property. Currently, this is a senior center in our largest neighborhood on the Northside, in my district, District 1, which is Brighton Heights,” he said. “There was already remediation… that was put forward, in the past, from a previous budget, that remediated the lead, the asbestos, and also stripped it down to its bare bones, so now it can enter into the next stage.”

Other grant awards went to the Greenfield Senior Center on Greenfield Avenue in the amount of $66,055 and the Homewood Senior Center on Frankstown Avenue, in the amount of $38,200.
