2020 Census expected to end Thursday, Oct. 15 at 11:59 p.m. Hawaiian time.

Northside residents who have not yet self-responded to the 2020 Census will have until 5:59 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 16 to do so online at 2020census.gov or by calling the toll-free census response number: 1-844-330-2020 where census takers are available to record counts by phone.

Despite a lower court order last week to re-extend the deadline back to the original “Replan Schedule” of Oct. 31, enumerators will now race against the clock to follow-up with unresponsive households in hard to count communities.

According to NPR, which broke the story on Tuesday, Oct. 13 at 5:06 p.m., seven of the eight-member Supreme Court sided with U.S. Secretary of Commerce, Wilbur Ross, who appealed to have the Ninth Circuit of Appeals order be stayed in preparation of ending the census count early. Justice Sotomayor dissented, noting that “…meeting the deadline at the expense of the accuracy of the census is not a cost worth paying, especially when the Government has failed to show why it could not bear the lesser cost of expending more resources to meet the deadline or continuing its prior efforts to seek an extension from Congress. This Court normally does not grant extraordinary relief on such a painfully disproportionate balance of harms.”

In a statement released on Oct. 13, the U.S. Census Bureau published the following:

“As of today, well over 99.9% of housing units have been accounted for in the 2020 Census. Self-response and field data collection operations for the 2020 Census will conclude on October 15, 2020. Specifically:

• Internet self-response will be available across the nation through October 15, 2020 until 11:59 pm Hawaii Standard Time (HST), (6:00 am Eastern Daylight Time on October 16, 2020) Visit 2020Census.gov to respond today.
• Phone response will be available for its regularly scheduled time on October 15, 2020. Click here for schedule and a list of numbers.
• Paper responses must be postmarked by October 15, 2020.
• Nonresponse Followup census takers will continue resolving nonresponding addresses through the end of the day on October 15, 2020.”

In an additional statement on Oct. 13, the Census Bureau published that 33.1% of the nation’s households were counted by “census takers and other field data collection operations” and that 66.8% of respondents had self-reported via online, phone or postal mail. The bureau tracks the completion rate and releases those state-by-state reports each day.

According to the bureau’s latest report, which only indicates self-response rates, Allegheny County has a 72% self-response rate. The City of Pittsburgh is 63.2% and the following are the current response rates as of Oct. 13 by tract in Northside neighborhoods:
