Northside Chronicle seeks new managing editor
The Northside Chronicle (NSC) seeks a managing editor for a July 1, 2022 start date.
The Northside Chronicle is the free hyper-local monthly print newspaper of Pittsburgh’s historic Northside community. 2020 marked its 35th anniversary.
The Managing Editor oversees the day-to-day operations of NSC as they relate to the newspaper’s editorial and online content and print and web editions. Duties include but are not limited to: reporting and writing stories and content for the monthly edition of the newspaper, weekly e-newsletter, and website; coordinating intern, volunteer, and freelance writer recruitment and submissions; managing web content and weekly e-newsletter distribution; layout and editing of the monthly print edition, and delivery of the print edition each month.
A degree in journalism is preferred; applicants with a communications degree will be considered. Must have experience reporting for a college or local newspaper. Managerial experience is preferred. Experience with Adobe InDesign required; knowledge of Adobe Photoshop and AP Style preferred. Must have your own vehicle.
Salaried position based on experience; $30,000-$35,000. Excellent benefits package including health care, 401(k), vacation, and sick days.

Function:

Primary responsibilities:
Editorial Management
- Plan stories and have the ultimate decision on editorial content
- Manage recruitment of interns and contributors
- Coordinate and assign stories to contributing writers and interns
- Receive and edit submitted editorial copy
- Assist in planning for and implementation of special newspaper editions
- Produce and manage NSC social media content
- Manage the newspaper’s web presence by updating thenorthsidechronicle.com and putting together the weekly e-newsletter in Mailchimp
- Design the newspaper and lay out editorial copy for each issue
- Ensure timely publication of the paper by coordinating with its printer
Reporting
- Produce stories for the print and online editions
- Find and maintain community and city sources
- Develop new story ideas and research their viability
- Follow up on previously reported stories
Business Management
- Manage recordkeeping of important documents
- Update the newspaper’s business plan as necessary
- Design and implement new products and software as necessary
- Complete annual CDBG grant submission
- Manage paid subscription mailings
- Schedule published content through social media platforms
- Deliver the newspaper to its monthly drop-off points
Community Role
- Act as a representative to the community on behalf of the newspaper
- Attend community events or meetings as necessary for reporting or general outreach purposes
- Ensure that vision and mission of the paper are carried out
