New photo gallery chronicles Pittsburgh baseball history
A new special gallery has opened at Photo Antiquities Museum of Photographic History, located in Deutschtown, which chronicles the history of nine Pittsburgh baseball fields.
Titled “Pittsburgh’s Historic Ballparks,” the exhibit is a spin-off of a book of the same name written by Northside Mark Fatla which was published March of this year. The Chronicle previously wrote about Fatla’s book in an article included in the March issue.
“The book morphed into a gallery,” Fatla said of the display.
The exhibit features multiple photographs, many from Fatla’s book, along with pieces of baseball history. One particularly notable display is a planning model for the construction of Three Rivers Stadium and the surrounding area during the arena’s construction.
“It’s one of a kind and shows you what they envisioned for North Shore,” Fatla said. “None of which they built but the stadium.”
The fields covered by the exhibit include early Northside baseball fields — which Fatla labels the “Cradle of Baseball” — Union/Recreation Park, Exposition Park, Forbes Field, the Nego League parks, Three Rivers Stadium and PNC Park.
Fatla will be at the gallery every Thursday, Friday and Saturday, from noon to 5 p.m., to speak with visitors and explain the displays. He can also give tours by appointment, by calling (412) 520-4888. Admission to the gallery is $10, and Photo Antiquities Museum of Pittsburgh is located at 531 E. Ohio St.
Copies of Fatla’s book will also be for sale, and he said he can autograph any copies.
Wise County Biscuits opening Northside cafe this summer
Wise County Biscuits, a business which opened in 2017, is opening a cafe on the Northside sometime this summer.
Wise County Biscuits announced on its Facebook page on May 3 that it will open Wise County Cafe at 911 Galveston Ave., which is located in Allegheny West, at some point in the summer. An exact date has not yet been announced.
In addition to the biscuits from which it gets its name, Wise County Biscuits sells egg sandwiches, sausage gravy and honey butter, according to the menu on its website. Wise County has traditionally sold its wares at community markets, such as the Squirrel Hill Farmers Market or Bloomfield Saturday Market. They have also participated in the Northside Farmers Market.
