State budget season begins
District 19 News: State Rep. Abney
Hello, Northsiders! I’m eager to share with you some of the important work I’ve been doing in Harrisburg and here at home.
Budget season is off to a strong start, as a bill establishing the allotment of dollars for services and programs throughout the Commonwealth passed the House in early June. As a member of the House Appropriations Committee, I’m proud to have contributed my input to a comprehensive budget that benefits all Pennsylvanians.
Speaking of budget legislation, I was pleased to add my affirmative vote to H.B. 1100, which would make more Pennsylvanians eligible for the Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program and increase the top rebate amount from $650 to $1,000. Expanding the program would put needed dollars in seniors’ pockets and help keep them in their homes.
The House also adopted a resolution declaring the first week of June as Union Organizing Week. I support all efforts to amplify the voices of union workers on the issues that matter most to them!
Additionally, I joined Pennsylvania House Speaker Joanna McClinton, my colleagues on the Pennsylvania Legislative Black Caucus, and others for the second annual K. Leroy Irvis Day of Action at the Capitol in late May. The day included hosting a discussion with state Rep. Rick Krajewski on ensuring incarcerated individuals have equal access to voting.
Former Speaker Irvis was the first African American to serve as speaker of the House in any state legislature, and it was an absolute pleasure to welcome his family into the House chamber. His legacy has already shaped the current identity of the People’s House, and it will continue to do so for years to come. I’m honored to serve the people of the 19th District as he did for nearly 20 years!
Back home, Allegheny County neighbors recently became eligible to apply for funds under the Whole-Home Repairs Program. Receiving up to $50,000 to address residence structural integrity and weatherization issues will keep families safe in their homes and discourage displacement.
More than $8.5 million in Pennsylvania Housing Affordability and Rehabilitation Enhancement funds was recently awarded to Allegheny County organizations geared towards helping citizens acquire housing. These dollars are invaluable to keeping a safe and secure roof over their heads.
Several of my Allegheny County colleagues and I, along with state organizations, have also authored a joint letter to the Public Utility Commission to streamline the process of applying to the universal utility program for individuals and families most in need. Everyone deserves equal access to clean water, heating and other essentials.
Have a safe and happy Fourth of July and see you next month!
