We’re all different. But when we visit the doctor, our treatments are often the same.
The All of Us Research Program thinks one day health care should be tailored for you. This is called precision medicine. And research can help us get there.
All of Us wants one million or more people to join. Your participation can help shape the future of health for generations to come. The program will last for 10 or more years. People who join will share information. This might be about their health, habits, and what it’s like where they live. It might also be about family history and genes. By looking for patterns, researchers may learn more about what affects people’s health. This may help improve health for everyone.
Precision medicine is health care that is based on each individual. The goal of the All of Us Research Program is to advance precision medicine. Precision medicine focuses on the power of three: the differences in our environment, lifestyle, and biology. By studying these differences, researchers may find patterns.
Why should you consider joining All of Us? People join for many reasons, and we value our participants as partners. Those who join can choose to see their own health information. Soon, this may include information from DNA results and health records.
We expect this will include information about:
• Your ancestry (where your family comes from)
• Your traits, such as why you might love or hate cilantro
• Whether you may have an increased risk of developing a serious health condition
• How your body might react to certain medicines
• Other health-related information.
What is DNA?
DNA is short for deoxyribonucleic acid.
It is the material that makes up the genes that pass from parents to their kids. Half of your DNA came from your biological mom and half came from your biological dad. Your DNA determines traits like your hair color, eye color, and risk for developing some diseases. Your DNA is more than 99% the same as everyone else’s DNA. The tiny amount that is different is what makes each of us unique.
Why is the All of Us Research Program studying DNA?
We know that certain changes in DNA can affect our health, but there is still a lot to learn. By studying DNA from All of Us participants, researchers could:
• Learn more about what keeps us healthy or makes us sick
• Identify which treatments work best for different types of people
• Create medications to treat or prevent common conditions, such as Chronic pain or diabetes How will All of Us study my DNA?
We will use the most current technology to analyze your DNA in different ways. Two ways we will do this are by:
• Genotyping, which looks at a small amount of DNA that gives us information about many of the common DNA changes among us
• Whole genome sequencing, which looks at almost all of your DNA As we learn more about DNA, we may be able to add more types of DNA results to this list.
