District 19 News: Rep. Abney reviews Gov. Shapiro’s 2024-25 state budget proposal
By State Rep. Aerion Abney
Hello, Northsiders! I’m eager to share with you some of the important work going on in Harrisburg and work I’ve been doing back home.
Gov. Josh Shapiro outlined his state budget proposal for 2024-25 at the Capitol early last month, one that includes a $1.1 billion increase in basic education funding and $975 million for the proposed higher education blueprint. Additional elements of the budget proposal include $100 million to reduce gun violence, $50 million to increase access to Pennie for health insurance coverage, and $20 million to support large-scale and continued innovation. Pennsylvania House Appropriations Committee hearings are currently underway, and I’m excited, with my committee colleagues, to help shape another budget for all Pennsylvanians!
Back here at home, I joined Gov. Shapiro and others to speak in support of the Pennsylvania Economic Development Strategy. This comprehensive plan fosters and grows the state’s economy through prioritizing economic investments that capitalize on the Commonwealth’s strengths, coordination between state government and businesses to accomplish goals in a timely manner, increasing job opportunities, continuing to innovate, and building strong regions that benefit individuals and businesses alike. I’m excited to be a part of the continued impact businesses in the 19th Legislative District and the Steel City at large have on the strength and prosperity of Pennsylvania’s economy for years to come.
I also want to highlight the $32 million- plus in state funds that will go toward the replacement of 1,375 public and 1,260 private lead service lines throughout Pittsburgh communities. These communities are at a disproportionately higher risk for lead contamination and include Central Northside, Manchester, Perry South and Spring Hill. Ensuring the health of the neighbors I represent and preserving the local environment are paramount for me, and these efforts will also help keep more dollars in the pockets of individuals and families who need them the most.
Enjoy the last days of winter, and I’ll talk to all of you again in spring!
