Northside Chronicle finalist for 2024 Golden Quills
By Sean P. Ray | Managing Editor
The Northside Chronicle is a finalist for Excellence in Written Journalism for the 2024 Golden Quills competition, the award competition of The Press Club of Western Pennsylvania.
The Chronicle is a finalist in the Public Affairs/Politics/Government category for the article “City plans replacement of Chestnut Street bricks, rail removal,” which was published in the May 2023 issue. The article detailed an April 13, 2023, meeting in which officials from the Pittsburgh Department of Mobility and Infrastructure (DOMI) discussed a plan to replace Chestnut Street’s bricks with new ones, a project which would also see the road lose its historic streetcar rails.
Residents attending the meeting suggested the rails be repurposed for some kind of public art installation or memorial, a suggestion which city officials acted on. The replacement of Chestnut Street’s bricks is expected to finish up this summer, and DOMI is looking into a partnership with Industrial Arts Workshop, a Pittsburgh-based sculpture workshop with programs for both adults and kids, to develop an art installation out of the rails.
Winners of the Golden Quills will be announced at a dinner held on May 28 at Rivers Casino. The dinner is an invite-only event.
