District 1 News: Multiple developments, events happening across Northside
By Councilman Wilson
Hello everyone!
As the weather gets warmer and we start venturing outdoors, I want to make sure you’re up to date on what’s happening in and around the Northside.
I’m happy to share that last month, the City’s Department of Mobility and Infrastructure (DOMI) installed speed humps on Concord Street, Tripoli Street, and Suismon Street in the East Deutschtown-Spring Garden community. These traffic calming measures will reduce speed and volume on these cut-through streets and will return them back to being neighborhood, residential streets. To review the scope of the project, visit engage.pittsburghpa.gov/neighborhood-traffic-calming/east-allegheny-neighborhood.
I’d also like to highlight the ongoing project that began mid-May to upgrade the traffic signals at the intersection of Brighton Road and Jacksonia Street. This signal upgrade was designed in-house by the DOMI Traffic Team and received funding through PennDOT and the 2023 Capital Budget. There will be minor impacts to traffic and no required detours. Complete details on the project can be found here: engage.pittsburghpa.gov/traffic-signal-projects/brighton-road-jacksonia-street-traffic-signal-replacement.
The Citiparks Farmers Market kicked off another season in Allegheny Commons Park on May 24 and is scheduled to run every Friday through Nov. 22. The market is open from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. and sells farm-fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, cheese, baked goods, and much more. All Citi-Parks Farmers Markets accept food stamps (SNAP) and credit and debit cards as part of Just Harvest’s Fresh Access program. For more information on the Farmers Market Season, visit pittsburghpa.gov/citiparks/farmers-market.
If you’re looking for fun, free entertainment this summer, head to Riverview Park on Saturday evenings at 7 p.m. from June 8 through July 27 for the “Stars at Riverview” concert series. Attendees are invited to bring a lawn chair or spread a blanket on Observatory Hill for incredible musical entertainment sponsored by the Allegheny Regional Asset District. Each week, concerts will be followed by a showing of “Dollar Bank Cinema in the Park.” The full schedule of concerts can be found here: pittsburghpa.gov/events/riverview-series. The full schedule for movies can be found here: pittsburghpa.gov/events/cinema-riverview. Thank you to the Citiparks Office of Special Events for continuing to provide these free events for Northside residents.
For more summer entertainment options for the family, Pittsburgh CLO recently announced new programs to help reduce barriers for families to be able to access programming all summer long. PCLO is also offering a Family Pass to help reduce the cost of attending the theater. For every Adult ticket purchased, up to four Child tickets can be added for just $10 each.
For parents torn between the desire to experience the magic of the stage and the responsibility of childcare, the PCLO Show Care program offers a solution. Parents can entrust their young ones (ages 3-12) to the care of Pittsburgh CLO Academy of Musical Theatre Faculty while they immerse themselves in the wonder of live theater. To learn more about these programs, visit pittsburghclo.org/plan/removing-barriers.
On June 4 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., PWSA will host a Water Workshop to learn about the process for treating and distributing water. This will be a fun and informative evening with facilitated table discussions to answer questions about your drinking water services as well as storyboards and hands on activities allowing you to learn at your own pace and engage with our team of water quality experts. The event will be held at The Pittsburgh Project at 2801 N. Charles St. To register to attend, go to pgh2o.com/news-events/events-meetings/2024-06-04-water-workshops-northside.
Finally, I encourage you to take the URA’s Housing Opportunity Fund (HOF) community feedback survey. Your feedback will determine how programs are designed and how funds will be used in the next year. To take the survey, visit bit.ly/HOF2025. The City of Pittsburgh provides $10 million every year for the HOF to address and support the affordable housing needs of Pittsburgh residents.
