Northside Business & Community Briefs July 2024
Northside pools open for the summer
All three of the Northside’s public swimming pools are open for the summer 2024 season.
In a press release, the City of Pittsburgh announced that Jack Stack, Riverview Park and the Sue Murray pools were among the 15 CitiParks Pools that are open for the summer.
The three pools that will not be open are the Homewood, Ream and Sheraden pools, all due to either renovations or repair issues.
The hours of operation vary for each pool. Jack Stack is open Monday through Friday from noon to 7:45 p.m., and weekends and holidays from noon to 5:45 p.m. Note that noon to 1 p.m. is an adult lap swim for the pool, as is 7 to 7:45 p.m. on weekdays.
Meanwhile, Riverview’s pool is open Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from noon to 7:45 p.m., with the same adult lap swim as Jack Stack. It is open from noon to 5:45 p.m. on weekends and holidays, with noon to 1 p.m. being an adult lap swim.
Sue Murray Pool is open weekdays from noon to 4:45 p.m. There is no adult lap swim at Sue Murray.
The city announced that it had recruited, certified and onboarded 140 lifeguards for the 2024 pool season, allowing all 15 eligible pools to operate.
Former Chronicle intern wins journalism scholarship
A former Northside Chronicle intern was the recipient of the Bob Fryer Memorial Scholarship at the 2024 Golden Quill Awards, hosted by The Press Club of Western Pennsylvania.
Madison Stokes received the scholarship, worth $5,000, during the awards ceremony. The Press Club has given out the scholarship since 2012, with more than $30,000 in scholarship money given so far.
Fryer was the former managing editor of The Tribune-Review, and was praised with helping turn the newspaper into “an award-winning major metropolitan newspaper,” according to an April 14, 2011, article in The Tribune-Review.
Stokes interned with the Pittsburgh Media Partnership, of which The Chronicle is a member, in the summer of 2023. During her time there, she worked at The Chronicle and The Pittsburgh Independent.
She produced two pieces for The Chronicle in collaboration with her fellow intern, Caitlyn Scott, specifically one titled “Spotted lanternflies soon to return to the Northside” and the other titled “How California Avenue businesses triumphed over COVID-19.”
In spring 2024, Stokes returned to The Chronicle, interning at the publication via the Pittsburgh Black Media Federation Chris Moore Internship. She again produced two articles, one titled “How do locals feel about the Science Center name change?” and the other titled “Teutonia Mannerchor welcomes public with open house.”
The Chronicle congratulates Stokes on her achievement.
