Allegheny Center Alliance Church celebrates 130th anniversary
Two new murals adorn the outer walls of Allegheny Center Alliance Church (ACAC), commemorating the church’s 130th anniversary.
The murals were unveiled during a celebratory weekend over Sept. 28-29, and were painted by Pittsburgh artist Kyle Holbrook. One of the paintings depicts Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., while the other depicts a varied group of people raising their hands together with the caption “Following Jesus in Diverse Community.”
In addition to the murals, the church created a documentary titled “By His Spirit” that details the history of ACAC. The documentary was shown during the celebration event, and is available on the church’s YouTube page, acacpgh.
ACAC began in 1894 when Albert Simpson, also known as A.B. Simpson, appointed E.D. Whiteside to superintend the Pittsburgh mission of the Christian and Missionary Alliance, of which Simpson was the founder. According to the documentary, Whiteside responded to his appointment by asking God to superintend, but saying that he would “run errands” for God.
The documentary goes through the lows and highs of the church’s history, including a period where it was almost seized via eminent domain.
The church also held a ribbon cutting ceremony for its Community Hub. The hub was completed in August last year, and the building serves to host the church’s community care sessions, counseling services and multiple forms of community outreach events.
“We want our neighbors to know this space is open for them,” said ACAC Lead Pastor Alan Hannah. “We have lots of workspace, free Wi-Fi, a play place for kids, and an awesome coffee shop called The Well.”
Finally, an original song celebrating the anniversary was also unveiled. Titled “The Same Spirit,” the song is available on ACAC’s YouTube page.
“You know, it’s kind of unheard of for an American church to not only reach a 130th birthday but to still be thriving,” Hannah said. “We believe obedience to the Lord is key. We don’t know what the next 130 years will hold, but as long as we continue to run His errands, I know it will be incredible.”
ACAC is located at 250 East Ohio St. For more information about the church, visit ACAC.net/events, or call (412) 321-4333.
