Conference Update: Introducing Director of Real Estate Joe Thomas
By Dylan Lukitsch | Columnist
Joe Thomas is a seasoned professional with over 40 years of experience in construction and project management, and he now brings his expertise to the Northside Leadership Conference (NSLC). As the Real Estate Director at the NSLC, Joe has been pivotal in shaping community-driven development strategies since he assumed the role in April 2024. His vast experience, having worked on projects across the United States, gives him a unique perspective and the skills needed to serve such diverse neighborhoods on Pittsburgh’s Northside.
In his role at the NSLC, Joe is dedicated to understanding and addressing the specific development needs of local communities. His deep commitment to the success of these communities is evident in his ongoing efforts to collaborate with key organizations like the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) and Action Housing. One of the major initiatives he is involved in currently is the Homeowner Assistance Program, which aims to provide significant financial support to homeowners in Pittsburgh who need assistance in maintaining or improving their homes.
The Homeowner Assistance Program, a joint venture between the URA and Action Housing, offers up to $35,000 to eligible homeowners. The program is designed to help people in Pittsburgh make essential repairs or improvements to their homes; however, there are certain eligibility criteria to qualify for the program. To apply, applicants must:
1. Live in the City of Pittsburgh.
2. Own the residential property.
3. Have a household income that does not exceed 80% of the area median income.
4. Be free of any outstanding taxes.
5. Have a current homeowner insurance policy in place.
Joe is actively assisting homeowners with the application process and is available for questions or guidance. Interested homeowners can reach out to him directly at joe@pittsburghnorthside. com for more information. Additionally, further details and to apply can be found by visiting Action Housing’s website at actionhousing.org/our-services/home-allegheny-repair-programs/. Applications will be accepted from Feb. 14 through March 14.
While Joe is focused on helping current homeowners, his vision extends beyond this program. He recognizes the need for accessibility improvements within the community and is eager to create a new residential program specifically for Northsiders. This program would address critical issues related to ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) accessibility within homes, particularly for the most vulnerable populations, including the elderly and those with disabilities. The goal is to make homes more accessible and comfortable, ensuring that all residents can live with dignity and independence, no matter their physical abilities.
With his extensive background in construction and development, Joe is uniquely positioned to understand the needs of the community and help transform those needs into actionable solutions. Whether it’s supporting homeowners with grants for necessary repairs or envisioning new initiatives to enhance accessibility, Joe Thomas is leading the way in making Pittsburgh’s Northside a better place to live for everyone.
To learn more about these programs or to get involved, Joe is always ready to engage with members of the community, listening to their concerns and finding ways to turn those concerns into tangible outcomes.
